Review: Edward Scissorhands Liverpool Empire Theatre
It’s no surprise that Matthew Bourne is hailed as the UK’s
most popular and successful choreographer / director. This stage production of
Tim Burton’s classic Edward Scissorhands is delightful, mesmerizing, stunning in its
execution, captivating and thoroughly engaging.
The story of Edward, a special boy who embarks on a journey
seeking acceptance and love is conveyed exceptionally well through the medium
of dance.
Dominic North played Edward on press night at the Empire in
New adventures’ production of the show. His delivery was exquisite, compelling
and totally convincing. The whole cast were top class and there are not enough
superlatives to describe their performances.
Act one opened with a heart wrenching prologue where the
cast conveyed an array of emotions and invited the audience to hitch a ride on
the roller-coaster ride of emotion that was about to ensue and last 2 hours in duration.
This was a show full of emotion with endearing scenes
throughout. The audience gasps with sadness one minute and then is swept along
on a wave of laughter the next. There is a perfect juxtaposition of humour and
sadness. The choreography is high energy, the musical score fantastic and the
set a visual spectacle to behold. The scenes were intelligently crafted and
named perfectly. The Topiary garden scene was a particular favourite of mine.
Dominic portrays the awkwardness, trepidation and diffidence
of Edward superbly and his skills as a dancer are second to none. The
tenderness and animosity shown towards Edward endears the audience to him and
it is no surprise that Dominic received a standing ovation.
Many of the scenes made my heart leap with happiness, expect
to smile a lot throughout this performance, equally be prepared to shed a tear.
So, should you go and see this show? Absolutely, it was a
worthy watch and I would rate it five gold stars. Whether you are a lover of dance or not, this is a must see.
The show runs from 27th -31st January
and tickets are available for purchase here
