SA To UK: Arts In Activism LIVE (in conjunction with Africa Oye & Nothin' But The Music) Sunday 30th Aug


Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) will soon take place in the city at the end of August (29th - 31st) The festival has recently announced that a new exciting international youth music project will also take place over the summer. The project is called SA to UK: Arts in Activism. 




Three months ago three artists from Liverpool took an extraordinary trip to South Africa. Soul singer Roxanne L.Jones, rapper Merki Waters and singer- songwriter KOF then collaborated with singer-songwriter Tresor and jazz vocalist Ncebakazi Yeko.

The output of the collaboration is a new EP which focuses on the artists shared experiences on the theme of activism and the struggles that they have encountered throughout their musical journey. The cross-migration of knowledge and ideas as a result of the collaboration has resulted in strong relationships being formed between the artists and a valuable EP being produced by KOF which aims to inspire and break down any barriers through the power of the music.

On 30th August District Liverpool (previously known as The Picket) will host a fantastic free night of live music which will feature musical performances from the SA to UK collective. Hosted by DJ Ace from BBC 1Xtra and Liverpool based DJ 2Kind 


Artist information / Biographies
Merki Waters - "There may be many barriers in life, but music can help break them down and art has always been a feared and powerful weapon in activism.”

Merki is one of the most exciting up and coming UK artists known for his skillful lyricism and smooth soulful vocal. He is inspirational in his strong work ethic and the biting commentary that forms the basis of his live performances creates a sense of aspiration in those who listen to his music. He founded the Lab Music foundation which supports underprivileged local acts in the Liverpool region  and also the YouTube platform "Lab TV" which now has almost 7 million views. He performed at this years Africa Oye festival in June as part of the new Oye introduces stage. With achievements like this, there is no wonder that Merki has been involved in this exciting and inspiring project.



Kof - Singer-songwriter from Liverpool - SA 2 UK EP producer

Kof is an acclaimed singer-songwriter and independent artist who has been influenced by a plethora of musical styles and genres throughout his journey and he has undoubtedly been able to draw on that experience in the collaborative process of the SA to UK EP in his role as producer. 




Roxanne L. Jones Soul singer
Roxanne L. Jones hails from Toxteth in Liverpool and at the young age of 22 has witnessed firsthand the underlying sexism displayed in the music industry when passionate, ambitious women like herself are dubbed as divas or other negative labels. She challenges the supposition that she is just another "sassy" female artist.





Tresor - 
Tresor - French for treasure is an award winning, multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter who is signed to Universal Music Publishing Group. He is based in South Africa, fluent in English, Swahili and French. His music is described as a new soul sound, moulded in Africa. 

Silvastone - a London based African artist, producer, singer-songwriter and DJ who has been tipped by BBC radio 1 Xtra as being amongst the 15 new artists to watch for 2015. His music is a fusion of Afrobeats and UK street sounds. He will soon be returning to East Africa  where he will feature in the third season of reality music TV series : Coke Studio Africa.



DJ 2Kind is one of Liverpool's finest DJ's who started his musical journey as a MC for one of Liverpool's pioneering Hip Hop acts "First in Command". He is a familiar face at some of the city's L8 legendary house parties where he hones his craft as a dj. His weekly StreetBeats show is aired every Friday on Wirral radio.




BBC Radio 1 Xtra DJ Ace will host the evening.

South African musicians Siphokazi and Shaimag will also perform on the night.
Sikholiwe “Shaimag” Genge, 24, is from Linge Township, Queenstown. He's a Lovedale College graduate now practising under the Abelusi Training Program. His artistic interests are Visual Art, Poetry, Hip-Hop, Beat-Boxing, Writing Songs, Composing, Acting, Dancing, Fashion, Modelling and Hairstyling. He enjoys learning about South African heroes and using those lessons to inspire his work.
