REVIEW: English National Ballet: Le Corsaire at Liverpool Empire Theatre

Le Corsaire is a swashbuckling adventure and tells the tale of dashing pirate Conrad (performed by Isaac Hernandez) and his journey across the seas to rescue his beautiful harem girl Medora (performed by Tamara Rojo). What ensues is a tale of abduction, murder sword-fights, love, hostility and shipwreck. To say it is action-packed would be an understatement.
The opening scenes of Act I - The Bazaar introduces the audience to the spectacular set and costumes (by Hollywood designer Bob Ringwood). Both set and costumes were inspired by the paintings and illustrations of the 19th century and were oriental and romantically styled. The set is stunning throughout and convinces the audience that they are a part of the performance, from the coves of the pirates lair to the rough seas, you are captivated and mesmerised by the magnificent scenes. Many of the scenes were reminiscent of Technicolour greats such as The King and I.

This is a wonderful offering by the English National Ballet, perfect for all of the family. The choreography, set, lighting, score are all magnificent. The two intervals were perfectly timed and attendance at this is a must for ballet fanatics and novices to the art alike. The final scene was breathtaking, without wanting to give too much away, I shall leave you to witness it firsthand. Spectacular showcase of some of the most talented ballet dancers. Don't delay, go and immerse yourself in it's splendor and by a ticket.
