REVIEW: English National Ballet: Le Corsaire at Liverpool Empire Theatre

The epic Russian ballet Le Corsaire opened at Liverpool Empire on Wednesday evening. The classical ballet which translates as "The Pirate" was beautifully presented by the English National Ballet. The performance which ran for two hours and twenty five minutes with two intervals was based on Lord Byron's poem The Corsair from 1814.

Le Corsaire is a swashbuckling adventure and tells the tale of dashing pirate Conrad (performed by Isaac Hernandez) and his journey across the seas to rescue his beautiful harem girl Medora (performed by Tamara Rojo). What ensues is a tale of abduction, murder sword-fights, love, hostility and shipwreck. To say it is action-packed would be an understatement.

The opening scenes of Act I - The Bazaar introduces the audience to the spectacular set and costumes (by Hollywood designer Bob Ringwood). Both set and costumes were inspired by the paintings and illustrations of the 19th century and were oriental and romantically styled. The set is stunning throughout and convinces the audience that they are a part of the performance, from the coves of the pirates lair to the rough seas, you are captivated and mesmerised by the magnificent scenes. Many of the scenes were reminiscent of Technicolour greats such as The King and I.

Act I sets the scene whereas Act II - The pirates cave was more action packed. The plot changes and the excitement reaches a crescendo. The set is stunning set inside the cave with brilliant blue sea water as the backdrop. The costumes are stunning and generously adorned with Swarovski crystals. The lighting was beautiful and the musical score simply fabulous. The Pas d'action sees Tamara Rojo, Isaac Hernandez and Cesar Corrales execute stunning pieces of choreography which advance the plot with brilliance.

Throughout, there is no faulting the artists of the  Company. This is  English National Ballet at it's finest. Artist director Tamara Rojo  was asked in 2013 to re stage Le Corsaire exclusively for English National Ballet and she has done a magnificent job in completing this assignment.

The two intervals were perfectly timed and attendance at this is a must for ballet fanatics and novices to the art alike. The final scene was breathtaking, without wanting to give too much away, I shall leave you to witness it firsthand. Spectacular showcase of some of the most talented ballet dancers. Don't delay, go and immerse yourself in it's splendor and by a ticket.
