REVIEW: Forgot the eggs - Vegan cakes and treats

On a cold and dreary October day at the office, I was typing away on my laptop and getting ready for a conference call when a colleague of mine came bearing gifts. Anyone who knows me well knows that sweet things are my absolute favourite thing in the universe and that I could quite easily give up savoury food and satiate my palate with sweet treats instead.

With eyes wide open and hands outstretched in gratitude, I was beyond excited to receive the bounty in front of me. Michael explained that his wife Zoe has a business which specialises in vegan cakes and treats. Well, this was music to my ears. He knew that I am predominantly vegan and 80% of the time I follow a vegan diet, so he was sure that I would savour and appreciate the delightful offerings. Let me tell you, he was absolutely right.

Delightfully Moreish vegan peanut brittle
The deliciously sumptuous peanut brittle pictured above was so delightfully moreish that I demolished the pack in one single sitting. You would never have guessed that these were vegan. They were sweet, light and possessed the perfect crunch of shop bought brittle. However, these gorgeous bites tasted comparatively lighter and cleaner. The texture was incredible, appropriately sweet, sumptuous and decadent. The preconception is that vegan food especially desserts and sweet treats are very bland but this bag of loveliness refuted that misconception.

Owner and baker Zoe has truly mastered the art of cake and treat making. She also sent me a wonderful gingerbread cupcake to sample before Christmas which was so tantalisingly delicious that the explosion of flavours had their own little Christmas party in my mouth. Regrettably, I forgot to take a picture. I remembered half-way through eating it and figured that a photo of a half- eaten gingerbread muffin would not look particularly great and would not do it justice. Take it from me that it was rich with flavour, light in texture and left a lingering taste on the palate which made you want more. The common theme that runs through all of Zoe's marvellous creations is that they are full of flavour yet light and totally vegan which brings joy to my heart. Zoe often uses chickpeas to create her masterpieces and the result is genius.
Owner and baker Zoe O'Leary
Zoe does not work alone to create her vegan cakes and treats. She is accompanied by Brenda who is a fellow baker and her daughter Penny who has the enviable task of being chief taste tester. It's a hard job but someones got to do it. I'm thinking of seeing if Penny needs an apprentice.

If you're vegan, sampling the delicious offerings by Zoe and her team is an absolute must and even if you don't follow a vegan diet, once you try them, you'll be left wondering why you decided to eat anything else. Similarly, If you, like me are a conscious-consumer, treat yourself by paying Forgot the eggs' website a visit. Once tried, you are sure to never forget how delightful the cakes and treats are. Once tried, never forgotten.
