REVIEW: Funny Girl The Musical - Liverpool Empire Theatre

The Press night of the incredible Funny Girl took place on Wednesday 8th March at Liverpool Empire Theatre. Olivier award winning actress Sheridan Smith played the role of Fanny Brice. Funny Girl the iconic musical is based on the true story of Fanny Brice's journey and tells how she gains Broadway success from honing her vocal talents and comedic skills.

The show has received critical acclaim in the West End and runs at the Empire until 11th March. From the moment that Sheridan Smith steps on stage, you fall in love with her. Smith and her lead Chris Peluso who plays Nick Arnstein captivate the audience and mesmerise them with their engaging delivery.

The score is beautiful and the audience is treated to a magnificent overture before the first scene.
Sheridan Smith had some big shoes to fill when you consider that Barbara Streisand performed in the original Funny Girl almost 50 years ago. She plays the role of Fanny beautifully and you are enamoured with her depiction of her journey from poverty to being one of the leading stars of The Ziegfeld in the 1920's. We witness her relationship blossom with the flashy gambler Nick Arnstein. Sheridan's vocal ability is impeccable and she delivers numbers such as "People" and "Don't rain on my parade" with finesse and charisma.

The whole cast are incredible, The chorus lines are powerful, the costumes are magnificent and the set is one of the best I have ever seen. This is a must see. Sheridan blew me away by her humour and wit. Her vocals were second to none and her rapport with her cast members was magnetic. The cast delivered a passionate performance. It was a truly brilliant performance and so deserving of the standing ovation before the final curtain. This show is an exhilarating masterpiece. Without a doubt, Sheridan Smith stole the show. Other favourites of mine were Rachel Izen who played Mrs Brice, Joshua Lay (Eddie Ryan) and Chris Peluso (Nick Arnstein).

This show pulls on the heart strings and has you in fits of hysterical laughter. It is worth the investment of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
