REVIEW: English National Ballet Presents Swan Lake - Liverpool Empire
On Wednesday 21st November, I had the privilege of attending the Press night performance of the English National Ballet's Swan Lake. The Ballet company have continued their commitment to UK touring by showcasing Swan Lake at Liverpool Empire Theatre between 21st and 24th November. The show will move to Bristol on 27th November until 1st December and the National tour will continue thereafter until 13th January 2019.
Lead principal Isaac Hernandez performed the role of Prince Siegfried dancing alongside lead principal Jurgita Droninat as Odette / Odile.
The classic tells a tale of romance, evil, tragedy and betrayal. From the outset, the performance was mesmerising with exquisite sets and costumes. Tchaikovsky's score is wonderful and sets the scene beautifully. Olivier nominated Derek Deane's production is outstanding and the choreography flawless.
Odette is kidnapped by the evil sorcerer (half-man, half-bird) Rothbart. He proceeds to turn her into a swan and to condemn her to a life of sorrow whilst being under his spell. We witness Prince Siegfried's love for the Swan Queen Odette and the short-lived nature of their love whist on this earthly plane. Evil seems to prevail when Rothbart the evil sorcerer plots a betrayal. The pair shuffle off their mortal coil and are resurrected in paradise, thus reinforcing the notion of triumph through tragedy.
In terms of performance, the entire cast or artists of the company are exceptional. In particular, the power in Isaac Hernandez performance was breathtaking. He truly is an exceptional dancer. That coupled with the grace and elegance of lead principal Jurgita Droninat was mesmerising. The poise and graceful elegance of the choreography was enthralling. As an audience, you truly buy into the fact that a love story between a Swan Queen and a prince is a viable occurrence. Such is the brilliance of the dancer's delivery.
A ballet with four acts, this was a lengthy show but not arduously so. The Pas de Trois in act 1 is beautifully executed with Daniel McCormick displaying his stamina and technical skill and Rina Kanehara and Alison McWhinney performing with elegance and grace.
Music Director Gavin Sutherland was phenomenal as he conducted the talented orchestra. Visually and aurally, this show is a masterpiece. Tamara Rojo continues in her role as Artistic Director of the English National Ballet and along with the other artists of the company is to be commended for bringing a ballet of such high quality to stages across the UK.
The show runs until Saturday 24th November and is the epitome of beauty. Don't miss out on the opportunity to watch this mesmerising performance.
Stunning, sophisticated with something for everyone. Swan Lake is a must see.
