On Thursday 13th March, The Paul McCartney auditorium provided the stage for LIPA’s 3rd year students to showcase their talents in the performance of “Moving Time”. This series of shows will be the 3rd year’s final performance as students before they embark on their professional careers outside of the institute.
The spectacle was a collection of dance pieces fusing various forms of dance; ballet, contemporary, commercial, jazz and tap. Nine dance pieces choreographed by professionals filled the 45 minute production and were executed with precision and beauty. The common thread that was intertwined in each performance was that of time and the concept of it. The transience of time, taking time out, devoting time to reflect and be introspective, the ability to move time and to be frozen in it are all beautifully explored in the production.
From the get go, the costumes, the lighting, music and energy and passion from the dancers was impressive. From powerful, dynamic, vibrant fast paced executions to contrasting graceful and delicately choreographed pieces, this show gave the audience a plethora of visual and aural treats. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed each offering, the piece called “Iron” performed in tap was undoubtedly my favourite. It was full to the rim with attitude, the choreography was tight and the music was fantastic. I could not help but move whilst sat in my chair. It ended too soon and I would pay a return visit to see it again. Brilliant!
The symbolism throughout was clever; “The Masque of the red death” for example comprised twelve female dancers who seemed to represent the digits on a clock and two males who perhaps represented the hands on a clock. Credit to each of the choreographers as the interpretation was fantastic. The 3rd year students put on an absolutely phenomenal show and it is definitely a must see for all the family. The show is appropriate length and captivating. Well done LIPA.
The show runs until 15th March. Ticket price £6.00, concessions £3.00
