REVIEW: CATS - Liverpool Empire

On Monday night, Liverpool Empire theatre played host to the cast of CATS for it's opening night. Based on TS Elliot's Old Possum's book of Practical Cats with music by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, the fantasy drama about a cat universe received a rapturous welcome by the crowds of Liverpool.

The show which will run until Saturday 16th July was a veritable feast for the eyes and a marvellous theatrical spectacle which was captivating from beginning to end.

Ever since it's creation and world premiere in 1981, CATS the musical has been the subject of critical acclaim and won the Olivier award for best musical in the same year. It has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 10 languages and been seen by over 50 million people worldwide. The 2016/17 tour of the Cameron Mackintosh & The Really Useful Theatre company production of CATS is  presented by David Ian.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, the story tells of Pollicle dogs and Jellicle cats who reside in a dog and cat world. Once a year they congregate at the Jellicle ball to hear the wisdom of their old leader and master of ceremonies Deuteronomy. At the end of the ball, he decides which one of the cats is given a second chance and effectively an extra life. The chosen one ascends to the Heaviside layer.

The way that the cats mingle with the audience is such a wonderful touch and allows the audience to connect with the energy of the characters. It adds an extra dimension to the show and creates a degree of intimacy with the audience.

The set is magnificent, the junkyard is beautifully lit with such attention to detail. The colours representing the metallic objects are vibrant and cereal boxes and cars litter the set.

We are given a wonderful insight into the personalities of each of the cats. The makeup is exquisite and so expertly applied that you are convinced that the cast members are actual cats.

Expect acrobatics, flying cats, choreography to the highest standard and excellent vocals throughout the performance. The show is almost one uninterrupted dance sequence and the choreography is stunning. Choreographer Gillian Lynne has done an excellent job. The musical score is uplifting and Tim Davies, musical director does an excellent job at creating the atmosphere.

The whole cast were fantastic and the following performers stood out to me.

MungoJerrie (James Titchener)
Rumpleteazer - Lucy Brushett)
Grizabella the Glamour Cat played by Marianne Benedict proved to be a show stealer. Her performance of "Memories" was mesmerising. Her magnetic stage presence engaged the audience with her powerful, emotional delivery.

It is a lengthy performance of 2 hours and 40 minutes which may be quite long for younger children during the week but it was an absolute pleasure to watch. It was breathtaking, magical and a wonderful fusion of drama, romance and fantasy.
