Review: Dirty Dancing Masterclass at Jelli Studios - Thursday 5th February 2015

On Thursday 5th February, I was privileged to attend a spectacular masterclass to launch Dirty Dancing – the classic storyon stage. Phenomenal cast members put on a stunning demonstration of some of the dance sequences from the show which is due to hit the stage of the Liverpool Empire on the 7th April, running until 25th of the month.

Liverpool's own Jennifer Ellison hosted the venue in her fabulous dance studio; Jelli Studios. As I was greeted by the Empire's press officer and escorted upstairs to where other guests were gathered, my excitement levels heightened. The sophistication of the chandeliers and the elegant mirrors in the studio provided the perfect setting for the masterclass.

Guests eagerly await the dance session

Guests were given a unique look behind the scenes of the show and gained a remarkable insight into how the choreography is intricately crafted for the mesmerizing scenes of the stage production.

Karl Sydow (Producer of Dirty Dancing) opened proceedings with an informative and enthralling presentation about how the production has grown to being a hit multi-million pound box office show. He regaled the audience with stories of conversations that took place in the early years before the production became established on stage. He also explained the growth cycle that the show had to go through to make its way from film to stage. This overview provided context and helped the audience appreciate the current status of the stage production.

With the first UK tour taking an extraordinary £42 million at locations across the country and receiving critical acclaim, there is no doubt that this 2015 tour will replicate the success.
The brief presentation concluded with video footage of stunning scenes from the stage production leaving the guests fired up for what was about to ensue. Sydow’s articulate and personable delivery was the perfect way to get the afternoon off to a flying start.
The gathered throng were then escorted downstairs to the dance studio where they were greeted by Associate choreographer Glen Wilkinson and dancers Lisa Welham and Albey Brookes

Glen gave the guests an interesting insight into how the choreography is created, how it is viewed from the perspective of the choreographer, dancer and audience and the components needed to convey emotion and to keep the audience engaged. It was interesting to understand the multi- dimensional aspect of the choreography and how the dancers adapt their performance to connect with the audience.

Having shown the guests how it should be done, it was then time for them to have their turn.
Kudos to Glen Wilkinson as his ability to break down the choreography in such a successful way to a mixed ability group was testament to his skill in his profession. The tone of the workshop was just right too. Strangers became friends as physical contact with dance partners became necessary. Fun and laughter resulted as well as a couple of well executed sequences performed by the guests as a finale.

The delight of the guests was palpable as they unleashed their inner Frances (baby) and Johnny. I am sure that all who took part felt empowered as well as excited for the upcoming production. The event was a genius way to whet the appetite for the upcoming show. The two hour workshop was exclusive and delivered with professionalism and finesse. The dancers – Lisa and Albey were exceptional and a joy to watch. If their ability and connection with the audience is anything to go by, the stage show at the Empire is destined to be phenomenal.
