PRESS RELEASE:
DISNEY’S ‘THE LION KING’ CONCLUDES
RECORD-BREAKING LIVERPOOL SEASON
The best-selling production in over a decade at Liverpool Empire
Over 130,000 people experience the hit production at the Empire
8 week season generates over £6.8M for local businesses
Disney’s THE LION KING will complete its record-breaking run at the Liverpool Empire on Saturday 5th July, having been seen by over 130,000 people at 62 performances and generating more than £6.8M for the city’s economy. Disney’s award-winning musical, which began performances on Thursday 15th May, is the highest-selling production at the Empire in over a decade.
The legendary musical is the largest touring theatre production in UK history and has been experienced by one and a half million people so far during its UK tour. The Liverpool season attracted visitors from every corner of the Globe, including as far afield as Switzerland, the USA and Australia.
Analysis of tickets sales show that, of the 130,000 visitors to the Empire, 57% were visiting that venue for the very first time, demonstrating THE LION KING’s ability to bring new audiences to the theatre.
Chris Brown, director of Marketing Liverpool, said: “From the moment we heard THE LION KING was coming to Liverpool, we knew it would have a significant positive impact – both culturally and economically. Nobody has been surprised by the fantastic reception it has received, and to see the Empire packed out night after night has been great. As well as being popular amongst those in the Liverpool City Region, a huge number of visitors have been drawn in from outside, which has had a tangible benefit for hoteliers, restaurants and bars. In a year of many major events in Liverpool The Lion King will stay in the memory as one of the highlights.”
Diane Belding, Liverpool Empire’s General Manager commented:
“We are delighted to have played host to the biggest show in the world during its visit to Liverpool. The whole city, and beyond, has really engaged with THE LION KING during its run here and to see thousands of happy faces leaving the theatre after every performance has been truly magical.”
The touring production now moves on to Southampton for an 8-week season at the Mayflower Theatre. Meanwhile, the acclaimed West End production continues to play at London’s Lyceum Theatre, where it is now in its 15thtriumphant year, and later this month will welcome its 12 millionth guest.
