Review: Manchester Jazz Festival - Greater Manchester Jazz Orchestra

Something special happened yesterday on a Sunny Sunday afternoon in the Thwaites festival pavilion in Albert Square, Manchester. Day 3 of Manchester Jazz festival got well under way. Conducted by musical director Richard Iles, the Greater Manchester Jazz orchestra put on their finest display and captivated the audience with their delectable sound.

The phenomenal youth jazz orchestra set the tone for the day with their tight compositions and crisp delivery and the air was filled with beautiful jazz which peaked to a wonderful crescendo as the ensemble got into full swing leaving the crowd hungry for more.

This was my first time seeing the orchestra and I was astounded by them, each musician played with vigour and passion. There was a palpable feeling of harmony and unison. With the wonderful compositions and a huge sense of fun and camaraderie, there is no doubt that big things await this orchestra. This was brilliant programming by Manchester Jazz Festival and I am utterly excited by this orchestra.

Richard Iles' interaction with the crowd was wonderful. He struck me as a humble, witty person who was rightfully proud of the young people who sat and often stood before him. There was frequent narrative explaining the titles of each piece performed. Each being rewarded with a chuckle from the audience or a nod of the head in acquiescence and appreciation of the beauty of the piece. From romantic pieces affectionately called "shove it" to exhilarating offerings such as "sprung", the orchestra consistently delivered a top notch score.

Each musician was worthy of recognition as they were all amazingly talented, some got the chance to perform a solo and they seemed completely unfazed and ever the professional. I had the pleasure of catching up with Alexander Bone after the gig and was blown away by his humility and maturity as an artist. Having started playing the saxophone at the tender age of six and being taught by his father, Alex has gone on to master his craft and recently won the title of "Young Jazz Musician of the year" 2014.

Well done to all who performed as part of the orchestra. The festival continues across the city and comes to a conclusion on 27th July. Bravo to Manchester Jazz festival. With 88 bands performing across 8 fantastic venues, this promises to be a wonderful week ahead.
